Here we go again.

I haven’t been writing here or anywhere else for quite a while. My recovery form cancer is continuing but taking far longer than I would wish. That however leaves a very boring topic to pen updates about. Suffice it to say I have been found cancer free for about a year and a half now and everything seems to be going okay. It is also about 10 1/2 months since I had that little bleeding episode Jan 2 and there has thankfully been no repeats of that.
Now onto something much more interesting. Little Stevie who has been given the keys to the country by my fellow Canadians is ready to introduce stricter regulations to ensure that anyone who immigrates to Canada can prove their proficiency in either english or french before they can even begin the immigration process.
The Cons of course suggest that this is actually to ensure the newcomers can integrate successfully into Canadian society. It is a thinly disguised attempt to once again vilify and abash newcomers to our country.
My ex in-laws, lovely people, came here from the ukraine right after WW2. Neither of them spoke any english. They like thousands if not millions more learned english. got married, raised families. found jobs, paid their taxes and lived an honest life contributing to our country and our community. Their 3 daughters have done much the same since and form just one of the success stories that have built our country into what it is.
My own parents had no problem with the language other than overcoming a pronounced scottish brogue but my dad was a plumber. By today’s standards he would probably not be eligible to enter the country. Again he is like thousands of others leaving europe at the end of the war for the possibilities available here and as others lived an honest contributing life for nearly sixty years here in Canada.
People like these are turned away from Canada now. If you don’t have a university degree or the money to start a business it is very difficult to get the required points to enter Canada while businesses constantly complain they cannot find enough skilled trades to fill the vacancies that exist.
Meanwhile the cons keep playing their divisive political games. Timmy Hudak may have lost the Ontario election with his attack on “new” Canadians disguised as opposition to McGuinty’s new policy of assistance for immigrants. His own ancestors, as he pointed out came from Czechoslovakia and as so many others found a life and opportunity here that have led in 2 generations to Timmy leading a major political party, being a past cabinet minister and contributing in his own pointy headed neo-con way to life here. I wonder if his grandparents could speak English well enough to begin that process when they arrived.
I expect we will hear from him soon trying to convince Harper that this policy is misguided.
